First Foods: Avocado

Being that Jett is now 4 months old, I wanted to start him on food. None of my kids ever liked rice cereal, so I didn't even want to go there with that stuff. I've been reading alot of babyfood making websites, and learned that avocadoes can actually be baby's first food. One of the sites made this statement: Avocados are often called one of nature's perfect foods because they are said to contain everything a person needs to survive.

My plan is to only feed him homemade baby food, which I've never done before, but I'm really excited about! I started last night with the avocado...I made approximately 7 servings, and froze them in these...

...obviously I kept one serving out to give to him, and this morning I put one in the fridge from the freezer to feed to him tonight. I realize that when he starts eating more, I won't get as many servings from just one, but it's still a heck of a lot cheaper than jar food. I can't wait to start making more, and mixing them together...trying new recipes. So much fun! I hope he likes it! He doesn't really have a choice in the matter though, I suppose.

So without further ado - Jett's first taste of food, play by play - or thought by thought. (at least how mommy interprets it.)

So what do we have here, mom?

Oh, it's food? Yeah, I've been wondering about that stuff. You guys really seem to like it ALOT!

Whoa, slow down a minute...what are you doing there?

Ick...what are you trying to do to me?!

Huh? Well, whaddya know?...this stuff isn't all that bad.

Gimme another taste of that.

Dad, have you tried this stuff? I bet you'd like it!

What's with the pictures? I'm eating here.

Look at my hands...I'm just trying to help shovel it all in!

MMMmmmm....see?

Okay mom, you've been most helpful, but I can take it from here.

GIVE. ME. THE. SPOON. I'll do it!

Nom nom nom...that was good stuff! Now what's for dessert?

No dessert?!?! You're kidding right?

You're hysterical, Mom!

Why big families are easier

I'm sure alot of you read MckMama's blog, but if you don't, she had an awesome entry last night. All about big families...and you know I'm all about big families. Or didn't you know?

Anyhow, this post is worth a read if you've ever thought to yourself, "Wow, how do those parents with so many kids do it?", or if you have a flock of children and ever heard the famous "I don't know how you do it."

You can find the original post here.

Enjoy!

Why big families are easier:

Patience. I never have to teach patience. My children know that I can’t drop everything for them if I have a baby in my arms.

Work Ethic. My children have learned to work because there are always chores to do in a small house packed with little messy lunatics. And they all learn quickly that sometimes they have to clean up a mess even though they didn’t make it.

Humility. My children have learned it’s not always their turn. They’ve accepted they can’t always get their way because other people have to get their way sometimes. They’ve learned that some children are better at certain things than they are.

Foreign language skills. You can learn a lot of Spanish by watching ten years of Dora the Explorer that you just can’t pick up in two. And now with the Diego spin off I’m practically fluent.

Laughter. The children have learned to laugh at the insane non sequiturs of younger siblings. They’ve learned that laughing just feels better when seven people are doing it along with you.

Competition. Do I really need to go into this? Everything is a competition in big families. The children compete over who reads faster, who drinks their milk faster, who gets to the bathroom first…etc. Everything is a competition and they’re all keeping score.

Balance. The floor of the front room of my home is a minefield of toys and childhood paraphernalia. Just walking through the room requires great skill and balance. I’m absolutely convinced my two year old will be a favorite for Gold on the balance beam in the 2016 Olympics. (She might have to lay off the cookies a little but I’ll deal with that later.)

Life isn’t fair. Sometimes you just give it to the baby because you want a little quiet. Not all the time. But sometimes.

Just say “No.” Being able to say “no” may be the most undervalued skill in this world. The need to be liked is pervasive. The need to be cool even more so. Having brothers and sisters teaches children to say “no” about 143 times a day. It’s a good skill.

Praying. They learn that nothing beats praying together as a family.

Nature/Nurture. Having many children has taught me that nature has a lot more to do with who my kids are than nurture. This is helpful, especially when your children misbehave you don’t have to feel bad about it. Just say “Stupid nature!!!” and blame your spouse’s genes.

Namecalling. You can occasionally call your child by the wrong name and still not be considered a terrible parent. They know who you mean just from your tone. Sometimes if you need something done you can call the wrong name and someone will still show up. That helps.

Spying. My children have learned that they can’t get away with anything. I have spies who look a lot like them who are willing to drop the dime on them for anything. Even at school I’ve got a child in just about every grade. If they do something I’ll hear. That keeps them nervous. And I like keeping my kids a little nervous.

Friendship. The children have many friends. They’ve got girly friends, crying friends, fun loving friends, consoling friends, and crazy friends. And they all have the same last name. And they’ll be there forever for each other. No matter what.

Love. I think my children have learned to love because there are others around them to love and who love them. I honestly can think of no better way to teach children to love than siblings.

Goodbye Lily

We sold our dog yesterday - very bittersweet. She was a great dog...kinda dumb, but she was excellent with the kids. It just got to the point where she was just too much work on top of taking care of 5 munchkins. When we bought her, we weren't pregnant with Jett, and we didn't think we'd be having anymore...at least not anytime soon.

I woke up early yesterday morning and just couldn't stop thinking about how the girls were going to handle everything. They knew we were selling her soon, but we hadn't told them when exactly, since we didn't even know (until Friday night) when the lady that was buying her was coming to pick her up. When they woke up, I had a long talk with them about selling her, and there were a few tears shed...mostly by Laney (who is always the most sensitive one). I told them how this woman has shown boxers for 15 years and would be showing Lily, and would take excellent care of her. A few years back, we got our first boxer, Remi, taken from our yard, and the girls still bring her up, and how much they miss her. We talked about how this would be totally different, because we know where Lily is going, and we know that she's in good hands. The lady told us that she would email pictures of Lily every once in a while.

When Mike met the woman to drop Lily off, she showed him about 20 pictures of her dog shows. She thinks Lily has the look. :) She is a cute dog, she just needed more attention than we were able to give her.

I told Mike I want NO MORE ANIMALS in this house. For at least 5 years. We have really bad luck with them, anyway. It's like dooming them once they come into this house. Lily was lucky to make it out alive. We've lost (meaning they've died) 1 dog, 1 cat, 1 lizard, 1 rabbit, 1 hamster, and about 10 fish. We've lost (meaning actually lost) one cat and one dog. Only 1 cat and 1 dog have made it out safe, without being lost or dying. Sheesh. That's a whole lot of animals for being married only 9 years. Yeah, we just need to stop with the animals.

Anyway. The girls are doing fine now...no more tears have been shed since yesterday morning, and the boys couldn't care less. I'll miss her being here with me all day, sitting at my feet while I cook, and laying on the back of the couch looking out the window. She was a good dog, and I'm sure she'll make a good pet for her new owners.

Farewell Lily. We'll miss you.

Happy Stinkin' Valentine's Day

Well, I don't know how I do it, but I manage to get sick only on holidays. I swear. It's totally ridiculous. and you know what else is ridiculous? The fact that I had to spell check ridiculous.

Anyway. So the night before V-Day, I woke up feeling sick to my stomach and figured, hey, why not...I mean it is a holiday, right? I was pretty sick to my stomach all day, so we stayed home from church with the boys (the girls stayed the night at my mom's and went with her) and Mike picked up the house for me...which was part of my V-day present. He also got me a beautiful Willow Tree figure...like this.
And the cutest thing he did? He wrapped up Reese's peanut butter cups with little love notes, and placed them all around the house for me to find. =) I LOVE that man! I have yet to get his present...can I use the excuse that I can't find it anywhere?...I mean, you know, the one store I've looked.

We also went out to eat the night before to have some time together, so that was nice. At least we got to do something with each other. With no kids.

I think this is the first year we have actually bought anything for the kids for Valentine's day. We let them open it on Friday night, and it was a good thing we did, because the stomach virus was on its way into our house with a vengeance.

Sunday night, Mike and Laney both started feeling sick, and all that night into Monday morning, Laney was awake with a tummy ache. Isaac woke up early on Monday morning and threw up, Elijah started having diarrhea, I was feeling the lingering effects of it, and Mike was still feeling pretty sick, so he stayed home from work. Luckily the girls had Monday and Tuesday off, because Chloe started getting it Tuesday morning.
But thank goodness everyone is feeling great today, and we're back to our regular scheduled programming. :) Praise the Lord that Jett was spared from it all!

So that's the story of our fantastic holiday weekend.
The end.

3 Month Jett

-He's rolling over, from back to belly

Ack! I.can't.get.it.

Do you not see the predicament I'm in here?! Do you think you could possibly put the camera down for 2 seconds and offer some assistance, please?

There we go...hey, look at me! I did it!

Yeah, mommy thinks I'm pretty awesome.

-He's cooing and talking alot

-He pretty much thinks I'm the funniest thing ever

REALLY?!?!

That's the funniest thing I've heard all day! You're TOTALLY hilarious, Momma!

-He's reaching and grasping for things

-He sits in his excersaucer now, with the help of blankets :)

Oooo...what is this thing? He won't eat me, right? I am okay in here, right Mom?

Oh, yeah...it's all good. I'm just fine. No worries.

-He still sleeps about 10 hours a night, from about 10pm till 8am!

-He LOVES his daddy!!!!

Oh, look...it's my Dad! He's pretty cool! Hey there Pops!

-He had his 2 month well check yesterday (at 3 months old...I know, I know...), and he's 13lbs. and 25in. (I think...it's somewhere around there. They wrote it down for me, but I'm too lazy to go into the garage and get the paper out of the van). He's in the 50th percent for weight and 75th for height. They told me that he's perfect, and the kind of baby that all mommies want. I pretty much agreed. He's holding his head up and pushing up when he's on his belly just the way he's supposed to be. God has blessed us so much. I can't complain for 1 second.

Look-alikes?

Alot of people tell me that Jett and Chloe look just alike. Here's a picture of them both at about the same age. What do you think?

Truth be told...

-My house is dirty
-My kids need baths...all 5 of them
-I need to get on my elliptical
-I have a horrible head cold
-If I close my mouth, I may suffocate, due to the head cold
-My girls have tons of papers that I haven't signed for school that probably should've been turned in by now
-My laundry needs folded
-My van needs to be cleaned. badly
-I need to go grocery shopping
-I slept till 8:30 today, got up when the baby started crying. fed him. and my girls got on the bus at 8:55...I can't believe they made it. they both had granola bars for breakfast, and Chloe's hair is fixed the same way it was yesterday. meaning I did nothing to it. they may actually have on the same clothes they had on yesterday. not really...I made sure they at least changed their shirts.
-I have no energy or desire to do anything around the house today
-My baby sleeps 10 hours straight at night
-LOST starts tonight
-My baby is sleeping soundly in his swing. and snoring. sweetly
-I feel like Meg Ryan on You've Got Mail, when she's sick, and kinda delirious. Yeah, that's me.
-I'm totally wasting time on here, trying to neglect the fact that I should do at least 1 of these things that I have posted about.
-nah...
